Questions about booking

How a class gets booked, how to move it or cancel it, and what you get back if plans change.

How does booking a class work?

Four steps. You propose times, your teacher picks one, you pay to lock it in, and then you practice. We'll keep you both posted at every step.

  1. 1

    You send a request

    Student

From a teacher's profile or a search result, tap Book. The form asks what you want to work on, which style, whether your teacher travels to you or you go to them, your zip code, and how many people are practicing.

Then you pick times. Choose several dates and times that could work — two to four is the sweet spot — and your teacher picks one of them. The earliest you can request is two days out. Nothing is charged at this point.

First time booking? Fill out your profile

Your profile is private to the teachers you book, and it's where you tell them the things they can't guess: how to get in, what equipment you have, injuries to work around, whether you're comfortable with hands-on adjustments, what you like to hear. It makes a real difference to a first class. If yours isn't filled in yet, we'll take you straight there once you submit your request.

    Notifications

    • We'll email your teacher right away to let them know a request is waiting.
    • We'll put the request in your inbox conversation with them, so you can talk it through.

    Your teacher approves a time

    Teacher

Your teacher opens the request from their dashboard or the inbox conversation and taps Approve Booking — or Review & Approve, when you offered more than one time, which lets them choose between them.

If none of your times work, they can send back times of their own instead, with Propose different times. See "Approving a reschedule" below.

Teachers: seeing who you'll be teaching

Before a class is paid for, you can see your student's name and photo but not their profile — it stays private until there's a confirmed booking. Once they've paid, a View student profile button appears on the reservation card, and their name at the top of the inbox conversation becomes a link. That's where you'll find their arrival instructions, what equipment they have, injuries to work around, hands-on-assist preference, and music notes. Worth reading before you set off.

    • We'll email you as soon as your teacher approves a time.
    • We'll nudge your teacher once a day if they haven't answered within a day.

    You book and pay

    Student

To complete your booking, open the reservation card — either in your inbox conversation with your teacher, or by tapping the "Ready to Book" reservation on your dashboard. Click "Book it now".

A window titled "Complete Your Booking" opens with two steps. The first is the address. If you're hosting, this is where you give your teacher the address to come to. If you're travelling to your teacher instead, there's nothing to type: you'll see their approximate area on a map and simply confirm it, and their exact street address is shared with you as soon as you've booked. Either way, tick the terms box and tap Continue to payment.

The second step is payment. Enter your card and tap the Pay button, which shows your total. Once it goes through, the card turns green and reads "Booking confirmed", with the full address, a directions link, and an Add to calendar button.

    Notifications

    • We'll email you and your teacher a confirmation, each with a calendar invite attached.
    • We'll remind you once a day if an approved class is still waiting to be paid for.

    You practice

    Student & teacher

Your teacher arrives at the address you gave — or you arrive at theirs — and you have your class. Classes are 40 minutes.

    • We'll ask you how it went shortly after the class.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel?

Both are on the same reservation card you used to book — either in your inbox conversation with the other person, or on your dashboard, where tapping the appointment opens the card in a window. Teachers and students have exactly the same buttons.

Rescheduling

Tap Request reschedule on the card and propose a few new dates and times. Nobody's class moves on its own — the other person has to pick one of your times and confirm it. Until they do, the original time still stands.

One hour to ask isn't 48 hours to expect a yes

You may send a reschedule request up to one hour before the class starts — but that's permission to ask, not a guarantee. Once you're inside 48 hours of the class, it is entirely at your teacher's discretion whether to grant or deny it, and the same applies in reverse when a teacher asks you. More on last-minute changes ›

A few other things worth knowing: only one reschedule request can be open at a time, and confirming one moves the existing class in place, so there's nothing new to pay and a pack class isn't spent twice. Both of you get an updated calendar invite that replaces the old one. And if your teacher can't make any of the times you originally proposed, they can send you new ones the same way before you've paid — that shows up as Teacher proposed new times.

Cancelling

Tap Cancel on the card and tell us why — the reason is required, and it's shared with the other person. Both of you get a cancellation email and a calendar cancellation. If you'd rather keep the class, the cancel window also offers Reschedule instead.

Refunds

The cutoff is 48 hours before the class starts.

What happenedMoneyIf you used a class pack
Your teacher cancels, at any pointEverything back, fees includedYour class is returned to the pack
You cancel 48 hours or more before the classEverything back except the payment processing feeYour class is returned to the pack
You cancel less than 48 hours before the classNo refund — your teacher is still paid for the timeThe class is used up
Either of you cancels before you've paidNothing was charged, so there's nothing to refundNothing is deducted

The processing fee is what the card network charges to move the money and isn't ours to return — it works out to roughly 2.9% plus 30¢. You'll see the exact refund amount in the cancel window before you confirm, and again in your cancellation email. Full policy: Terms of Service, sections 8.4 and 8.5.

Last-minute changes

Inside 48 hours, moving a class is allowed but it is up to the other person — they have already set the time aside, and they're under no obligation to accept a new one. Send the request early, say what happened, and treat a yes as a favor rather than a given. If they decline, the original class stands and the refund rules above apply as usual.

If you're the one cancelling inside 48 hours, you won't get a refund and your teacher is still paid — so asking to reschedule is almost always the better move. Teachers: cancelling this close to the lesson really disrupts a student's day, so please try to offer a nearby time first.

Someone asked to reschedule — how do I approve it?

When a reschedule request is waiting, a coral banner appears at the top of the reservation card, in both your inbox conversation and your dashboard. What you see depends on who asked.

A reservation card with a coral banner reading "Teacher requested to reschedule", three proposed time chips with the first one selected, and Confirm new time and Decline buttons
When someone asks you: pick a time, then Confirm new time.
A reservation card with a coral banner reading "You requested to reschedule" and a Withdraw request link
When you asked them: your only control is Withdraw request.

If they asked you

The banner reads Teacher requested to reschedule or Student requested to reschedule, with the times they proposed underneath. Tap a time to select it — it fills in to show it's chosen — then tap Confirm new time. The class moves to that time immediately; you don't pay again, and if you booked with a pack, no second class is deducted. Both of you get a confirmation email with a new calendar invite that updates the old one in place.

Decline turns down all of the proposed times and leaves the class exactly where it was. Declining doesn't send an email, so if it's the times that don't work rather than the class itself, send a message in the conversation and suggest something better.

If you asked them

The banner reads You requested to reschedule and the only control is Withdraw request, which cancels your request and keeps the original time. You can't confirm your own times — that's the whole point of the step. If you need to propose a different set, withdraw first, then send a new request.

How long is a class?

40 minutes. Every class booked on Practice Togetherly right now is the same length, so the price you see on a teacher's profile is the price for a 40-minute private session with them. There's nothing to choose in the booking form.

It's a real class, not a taster: enough time for a warm-up, the work itself, and a proper close. Longer sessions are something we're building, and we'll say so here when teachers can offer them.
